While decorative walls continue to serve,

"Another historic charmer: The ornate Hotel Utica in upstate New York's Mohawk Valley. The 112-room property boasts a pillared, two-story lobby, rich mahogany paneling and real crystal chandeliers. Originally built in 1912, the hotel closed in 1972, but was meticulously restored and electronically equipped during a $12 million restoration. It reopened last year and rates are exceedingly modest: below $90 a night. Now the hotel's owners are considering adding wireless Internet access so laptoppers can log on from anywhere in the hotel."
